The Andhra Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has expressed happiness at the Airport Authority of India’s (AAI) move to expand the Vijayawada airport at Gannavaram.

In a letter addressed to the AAI’s Chennai Regional Executive Director T.S. Chandramauli, ACCI president M. Muralikrishna referred to Mr. Chandramauli’s recent visit to the airport to review situation relating to new terminal building, automation of air traffic control system, instrument landing system (ILS), layout and other development works, and said that upgradation of the airport as a modern and international airport was essential for the region.

Stating that the AAI had been improving facilities like expansion of the runway (to 7,500 feet), construction of new apron and taxiway and installation of ILS, he observed that the recent approval for Category VII fire services had also paved the way for receiving Airbus 320/321 or Boeing 737- 700/800 aircraft at the airport.

Speaking about the AAI’s bigger plans of further expansion of the runway to 10,500-feet, construction of new terminal/fire station building and cargo complex besides other facilities, the ACCI president said that development of the airport assumes added significance in view of the impending bifurcation of the State. He said that the Chamber was following up the issue of land acquisition for expansion with the State Government.
