The Central government is contemplating setting up a new body - National Council for Higher Education and Research (NCHER) - to regulate all activities of educational institutions in the country, Union Minister of State D. Purandeswari said on Monday.

After the new regulatory body for educational institutions is set up, the powers of the University Grants Commission(UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will be reduced, the Minister of State for Human Resource Development (Higher Education) said on the sidelines of a function here.

Ms. Purandeswari said NCHER will be a single window regulatory body for all educational activities in the country.

The new body will also look into the activities of foreign universities which are establishing their campuses in the country, she said.

According to the Union Minister of State, so far these foreign universities were not regulated by any regulatory body.

She said foreign universities will bring in healthy competition among the educational institutions, thereby improving quality of education.

Foreign universities will meet the requirements of students who are willing to pursue higher education and research in the country, she added.
