Peasant leaders and agricultural scientists have raised the pitch for establishing a Central Agricultural University at Lam village on Guntur-Amaravathi Road.

At an intellectual forum meeting held at A.P. Cotton Association Hall under aegis of Kisan Foundation of India, former Member of Parliament Y. Sivaji on Wednesday demanded that the Central Agricultural University be set up on the 500 acres already identified at Lam besides the Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS).

The region rich in varied types of soils including, black cotton soil, red, alluvial, sandy soil and soil mixed with rock would pave the way for soil tests and research for the benefit of the farming community.

Dr. Sivaji also said that the region had abundant water and the existing rail, road and air connectivity through Gannavaram airport would make it an ideal location.

The Centre had already allotted Rs.200 crore for the establishment of Central University according to the State Re-organisation Act 2014. Associate director of research, RARS, Lam, Eedara Narayana Pradesh said that Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University should be relocated in Andhra Pradesh for the convenience of students, staff and the teaching faculty. The agricultural university could be relocated at Veterinary College campus opposite the airport at Gannavaram, he said.

Retired principal, ANGRAU, Manne Subba Rao, secretary AP Cotton Association Pavuluri Kiran Kumar also spoke.
