Leaders of the Left parties in the city on Sunday called upon party activists and sympathisers to make the proposed ‘Jail Bharo' protest on April 8 a grand success.
Addressing a joint press meet at Pamidutt Bhavan as part of the 10-day campaign by the Left leaders, former MLA and Communist Party of India (CPI) city secretary K. Subbaraju came down heavily on the Congress government for what he called ‘failure to curb' the soaring prices of essential commodities. He said the government had been embracing pro-rich policies that proved detrimental to the interests of the common man. The welfare schemes introduced for public welfare were gradually debilitating thanks to the anti-people stand of the ruling party.
Mr. Subbaraju said as part of the nation-wide ‘jail bharo' programme, thousands of party workers and sympathisers would court arrest in front of the Sub-Collector's office on April 8.
City secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) R. Raghu lambasted the Congress government in the State for ‘playing havoc with the life' of the common man. He alleged that increasing role of middlemen in the public distribution system was depriving the poor of their rights. Taking strong exception to what he alleged as ‘scaled up attacks' by the Congress on the Left parties, he said people would not tolerate such acts and teach the party a fitting lesson. Later, the leaders released a wall poster of the ‘jail bharo' programme. Former MLA and CPI leader Sk. Nazar Vali, Palla Surya Rao, Jogiraj of the CPI(M) and others were present.
