Municipal Commissioner G. Ravi Babu on Saturday appealed to all sections to extend their cooperation in making Vijayawada a plastic-free city.
Addressing a meeting attended by officials of South Central Railways Vijayawada division, AP State Road Transport Corporation, rythu bazaars and Kaleswararao Market besides vendors and traders at Rajiv Gandhi wholesale flower market, he said everybody must contribute towards implementation of a blanket ban on use of plastic covers in the city. He said places like Kanaka Durga temple atop Indrakeeladri hill and the Mary Matha shrine atop Gunadala hill needed special focus in the wake of the huge crowds thronging these places. He said use of only three categories of plastic bags – cloth, paper and bio-degradable bags would be allowed.
He said it was the responsibility of the officials concerned to ensure replacement of plastic glasses used by vendors in railway stations with paper glasses, stoppage of the use of plastic covers to pack items by eateries. The RTC officials must monitor the ban in bus station which witnesses a huge floating population, he said. VMC chief engineer G. Kondalarao, chief medical officer M. Satyanarayana Raju, assistant medical and health officer Iqbal Hussain were present.
