Building restrictions in airport zone

November 19, 2011 03:04 pm | Updated October 18, 2016 12:56 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Following proposals for expanding Gannavaram Airport, the officials of the Urban Development Authority took up a drive to educate the village secretaries of various panchayats in the funnel zone of the airport on various restrictions on high-rise buildings there. The secretaries were informed about the existing rules and also the need to refer to new building applications to the Airports of Authority of India and the UDA.

The issues came up at a workshop conducted here on Friday by the UDA for village secretaries and other officials concerned regarding issuing of building plans in Kesarapalli, Allapuram, Ajjampudi and Buddhavaram which fall in the funnel zone.

The VGTM-UDA vice chairman G.S.R.K.R. Vijay Kumar and AAI Airport Director C. Pattabhi addressed the participants on various aspects of building rules and regulations and also the future expansion plans of the airport respectively. Mr. Vijay Kumar asked the village secretaries not to sanction building plans till the applications get no objection certificates from the AAI. This is applicable to the villages falling in the flight path of aircraft during their landing and take-off. The area covered under this comes to about 5 km along the flight path.

At the day-long workshop on Friday, information was provided to village secretaries and others as to why high-rise buildings are restricted in funnel zones and the hazards of presence of such buildings in flight path. The building restrictions are clearly given in the GO 678 issued by the Municipal Administration Department in 2007.

Buildings of only up to three metres height would be allowed within 150 metres of the airport and the AAI would have to clear building applications in this regard.
