BSNL to focus on broadband in rural segment

It will come out with ‘full talk time’ offer around Dasara festival

As part of the 13 anniversary celebrations Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) - Krishna Telecom District has floated a new offer for its Broadband connectivity.

Disclosing the offer at a press conference here on Tuesday, BSNL Senior General Manager, Krishna Telecom District, V. Sundar said that the Broadband users will be given 10 per cent free extra download with effect from Tuesday. “This offer will be valid for the next three months,” he said.

The telecom major will also be coming out with ‘full talk time’ offer around the Dasara festival and the date will be notified shortly.

Giving an overall update of BSNL’s performance in the last year, Mr. Sundar said, optic fibre was the future and keeping that in mind emphasis was being given to the FTTH (Fibre to the home) initiative. He informed the press that the number of accounts under the FTTH has gone up from 80 in the previous year to 132 in the current year and the target is to achieve 500 connections by the year-end. “The FTTH can accommodate Internet speed up to 100 mbps,” he said. He also added that BSNL has about 2400 km. of optic fibre line laid in Krishna District and they were ready to lend them to NOFN, as and when required.

Mr. Sundar also pointed out that a lot of attention was being paid for developing the Internet connectivity and usage in the rural areas. “So far we have been able to set-up about 150 high speed Internet kiosks in the rural areas of the district and the charges per hour have been fixed at Rs. 5. VIMAX is another area where we are working with a focussed approach. VIMAX was developed to provide high speed Internet access in the rural areas where there was no lines laid, and so far we have been able to generate about 350 connections,” he informed the media. He informed that the telecom company had closed the year, with a turnover of Rs. 126 crores and this year the target was to achieve Rs. 139 crores.

On the flagship landline connections he said that the district has 184 telephone exchanges catering to 1.75 landline customers. Giving an overall picture he said, “We have about 30, 935 Broadband customers and 5.75 active mobile customer base.” On future projects he said that 90 new cell towers to the existing 318 will be added by this year end at a cost of Rs.21.25 crores under phase VII. “Of the 90, about 65 will be located in the rural areas and 25 in Vijayawada city limits,” he said.

He also informed that two of its employees K. Srinivas and K. Narasimha Rao were awarded the BSNL Vishista Sanchar Seva Padak this year for their exemplary service. On the education front BSNL has started a three-day BSNL Certified Telecom course for B.Tech students and a similar one-day course for polytechnic students. “The colleges have to invite us to impart the course and we will take it up at a very nominal fee,” he said.
