The first Car-free Sunday, an initiative of The Hindu and Vignan University held in association with Guntur Urban Police and Guntur Municipal Corporation began on an enthusiastic note at the NTR Municipal Stadium on Sunday morning. Starting from this week, the event would be held every Sunday morning at all major roads and streets.
Inaugurating the event, Superintendent of Police, Guntur Urban, Ch. Vijaya Rao said that the initiative to promote use of non polluting vehicles and saving the environment was an innovative one and appreciated the efforts of The Hindu in promoting such causes.
Municipal Commissioner C. Anuradha said that people should avoid using polluting vehicles at least once a week. She said that GMC has taken up several programmes to create awareness on sanitation. The commissioner asked the people to download Pura seva app on their mobile phones and take part voluntarily in the Swachh Surveykshan survey.
Vice chairman of Vignan Group of Educational Institutions Lavu Krishnadevarayulu said that the event was to promote awareness on a clean environment.
The early morning joggers and sports persons at the stadium later were treated to some entertaining stuff. Children and youngsters let their hair down as they took part in dance events on stage.
Associate vice president, Circulation, The Hindu, A. Sridhar and Regional General Manager, The Hindu, Andhra Pradesh SDT Rao were also present.
