A partial bandh was observed in the district on Friday, in response to a bandh call given by various political parties, students and the AP NGOs protesting division of Andhra Pradesh.
Leaders of YSR Congress and Telugu Desam parties, Students Joint Action Committee and members of APNGOs took out rallies and organised protests opposing the Union Cabinet’s approval for carving separate State for Telangana.
Educational institutions voluntarily observed bandh, while shops, hotels, cinema theatres and other establishments partially participated in the bandh. A few banks declared holiday in view of the bandh call.
The protestors went around the main roads in One Town, Two Town, Jinnah Tower Centre, Bus Station Centre and other places raising slogans against the Centre for splitting the State. They alleged that injustice was being done to Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema districts.
Rasta rokoActivists of YSR Congress and Telugu Desam parties staged rasta rokos at Shankar Vilas Centre and at Hindu College Junction. The agitators stopped buses, autos and other vehicles at several places. However, the police pacified the protestors and prevented any damage.
Congress, BJP, CPI and CPI (M) party cadre were not seen in the protest programmes and the ruling party leaders went into hiding soon after the Centre gave a nod for creation of separate Statehood for Telangana on Thursday night.
Police arranged tight security at all public representatives’ houses, government offices and bureaucrats’ houses. Police pickets were arranged at bus and railway stations and other sensitive areas. Very less number of public were seen on the platforms in the railway stations and at bus station complex.
Bandh was peaceful in Narsaraopet, Tenali, Sattenapalli, Bapatla, Gurajala and other towns in the district.
