Municipal Commissioner Md. Abdul Azeem will make a presentation on ‘London transportation model vis a vis Vijayawada city’ at an international conference on transportation being organised by the Government of India in December. The conference schedule is yet to be announced.
“All the conditions prevailing in London may not be suitable for the Vijayawada city. But, we can take a cue from the European models,” he said.
Speaking to The Hindu over phone from Delhi, Mr. Azeem said that the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) would organise a workshop on public transportation in the city shortly. The stakeholders like corporations across the country, CEPT, Ahmedabad, IUT, Delhi, would be invited to discuss concerning the transportation, he said.
The commissioner, at a meeting in Delhi on Tuesday, stressed on the need to evolve a strategy for an effective public transportation. He also underscored the need to evolve unique models for every city to suit their requirements. It was also not correct to rank the cities based on parameters such implementation of BRTS project.
