Senior volleyball player and assistant pointsman G. Pydi Raju received the award meritorious service for the year 2011-2012 from Union Railway Minister Mukul Roy at New Delhi on Monday for averting a rail mishap. Raju, working at Anakapalle station in Vijayawada Division, noticed a hot axle in a goods train proceeding at the maximum permissible speed and informed his higher-ups immediately thus averting a major accident in the Visakhapatnam - Anakapalle section last year.

Divisional Railway Manager Anurag, senior Divisional Operating Manager G. Venkateswara Rao and other officers congratulated Raju for his commitment towards work. “Raju, who was appointed in sports quota, represented South Central Railway in several inter-divisional tournaments and brought laurels to the division,” said Vijayawada Division Welfare Officer N. Arjuna Rao here on Wednesday.
