He wants identification of units resorting to encroachment

MP Lagadapati Rajagopal has asked chief engineer of the Nagarjuna Sagar Project Canals to look into complaints of the encroachment of the Nagarjuna Sagar irrigation canals passing through Kondapalli by industries in that area, including Lanco Power.

Responding to reports of encroachments resulting in obstruction of water flow, the MP wrote to Chief Engineer Sarathchandra Reddy directing him to treat the matter as urgent.

Citing reports suggesting that the irrigation water canals were built for supply of water through Kondapalli minor, sub-minor, and Kavuluru sub-minor canals, he said these canals extended irrigation water to reservoirs covering an ayacut of 2,000 acres located in Kavuluru, Kattubadipalem, Kondapalli, and Pinapaka villages in Ibrahimpatnam and G. Konduru mandals.

The MP said reports appearing in a section of media alleged that small, medium, and large industries in Kondapalli Industrial Area encroached upon this land by constructing walls and other activities, and thereby stopping water flow to the reservoirs.

The MP said the issue had never been raised in the last 25 years of existence of the Industrial Estate at Kondapalli.

He said the Chief Engineer must immediately look into the matter to know the status of water channels, their origin, and destination and find out since when the water flow had been obstructed besides the details of the ayacut area which receives water from the reservoirs.

He said Mr. Reddy must identify the units resorting to encroachments and do the needful to re-establish the channels to their full capacity. He also wanted stringent action against those found guilty on this count.
