There was an overwhelming response to enroll in the army from eligible candidates from Srikakulam, East Godavari, Krishna and Yanam on Sunday. The authorities received 4,325 applications at the Army Recruitment Rally being conducted at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium.
The stadium has been converted into a veritable fortress with iron barricades. The part of the stadium surrounded by the gallery has been converted into a running track. The area outside the gallery was used to process documentation.
The Mahatma Gandhi Road and the Stadium Road leading to Red Circle were full of youngsters aspiring to join the army.
“I have come from Kakinada. The authorities verified my certificates today and asked me to come for the physical fitness test tomorrow,” said S.Srinivas Kumar.
For want of chairs the candidates had to sit on the ground in the sun. Some of them were made to sit in galleries where there was shade while the Army recruitment staff verified their certificates.
District Youth Welfare Officer V.Subba Rao said that the certificates of 4,325 candidates were verified on the second day and 1,725 have qualified for physical test on Monday.
Running and other physical fitness tests were conducted for 1,002 candidates Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and West Godavari whose documentation was cleared on Saturday the first day of the recruitment rally. However only 305 out of 1,002 qualified for medical, Mr Subba Rao said.
The stadium was filled with vinyl banners giving details about the remuneration they would earn for the different posts.
