Incessant rains triggered by North-east Monsoon and a low pressure area over Bay of Bengal forced the A.P. State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) authorities to suspend some of its services.
Roads in the rain-battered city wore a deserted look as people stayed indoors to escape the brunt of the downpour. The RTC authorities suspended bus services between Sattenapalli and Piduguralla in Guntur district after gushing rain water overflowed on the road, disrupting traffic movement on Guntur-Hyderabad route on Thursday.
“Barring this route, there are no reports of disruption of bus services due to road damage following heavy rains. Since there was a drastic decline in the number of commuters in the last four days due to the rains, we chose to cancel about 30-35 per cent of the bus services on Thursday,” said Corporation’s Executive Director Vijayawada, R. Nagaraju.
The RTC depot at Vidyadharapuram, meanwhile, came under a sheet of water. Bus crew had tough time wading through knee-deep water that entered into the depot premises. “It is largely due to the municipal drains that overflow and inundate the bus shelter premises. The municipal authorities need to look into the problem,” said Mr. Nagaraju.
