Awareness should be created among students on irrigation projects: Minister

Minister for Water Resources Devineni Umamaheswara Rao said a Central Water Commission (CWC) Designs and Research wing team will visit the Polavaram project from March 6 to 9 to finalise the designs.

He sought the engineering experts in the state to visit the project site and give their valuable advice for the speedy progress of the project.

Participating in the 15th Engineers’ Day, celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of eminent engineer K. Sriramakrishnaiah at Tummalapallivari Kshetraiah Kalakshetram here on Friday, the Minister said that several irrigation projects were progressing fast in accordance with the intention of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to make the state drought-free. He stressed the need for bringing awareness among students on the progress of projects, particularly Pattiseema and Polavaram.

The Minister said that Andhra Pradesh would emerge as the ‘land of river linkage’ after the Godavari, Krishna and Penna were linked.

Addressing engineering students, farmers and officials at the Engineers’ Day celebrations, the Minister said the Chief Minister had set the linking of the three rivers as a target. After it was done, Andhra Pradesh would become the first state to link all the major rivers, he said.

The Minister said several great projects were being built in the state. Engineering students would gain a lot of practical knowledge by visiting the Polavaram Project site.

Advisers to the Water Resources Department Cherukuri Veeraiah, Rauthu Satyanarayana, Srinivasa Reddy and Lakshmikantha were felicitated on the occasion.

In a high-tech demonstration, Engineering in Chief M. Venkateswara Rao showed the students the progress of work on the Polavaram Spillway, Spill Channel and diaphragm wall with the help of cameras and drones on the site. Padma award winner Turlapati Kuthumba Rao and others spoke.
