Traffic woes: Officials put up barricades at the place where the road caved in on K.T. Road near Vaagu centre, in Vijayawada on Thursday.

The poor quality of roads in the city came to light again after the recently laid K.T. Road near Chittinagar caved in late on Wednesday night owing to a leaking water pipeline beneath the road. This led to a chaotic situation on the road.

Futile attempt

The VMC initially attempted to fill the crater after the leaking water pipeline underneath it was sealed. However, the repair work was called off when the road sank further. Unable to assess the area that needs to be repaired, VMC officials called off the work on Thursday evening and would thoroughly inspect the road and the pipeline underneath it on Friday. About 15 days ago, a part of the Ganapati Rao Road caved in following leakage of the UGD.
