Anna Hazare to visit city

February 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Social activist Anna Hazare will visit Vijayawada region as part of his endeavour to generate a nation-wide anti-land acquisition ordinance movement.

“Mr. Hazare is planning a larger movement of farmers across the country by going around States and he has agreed to come to Vijayawada,” said B. Ramakrishnam Raju, national convenor of National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM).

According to Mr. Raju, leaders in Delhi who are close to Mr. Hazare, acknowledged the fact that the present scenario in Andhra Pradesh warranted ‘Anna’s’ visit. “Anna has agreed to come to Vijayawada and the visit may happen in March-end or in the first week of April,” he said.

Mr. Hazare is said to have asked his close aides to constitute a committee of dedicated leaders of society to lead the proposed nation-wide agitation against the proposed amendments to the Land Acquisition Act.

The committee will be in place in a week and the probable members include India’s ‘Waterman’ Rajendra Singh, social reformer-turned-politician Medha Patkar, activist from Delhi Rakesh Rafi, two-time MLA-turned farmer leader from Madhya Pradesh Sunilam and Prafulla Samantara of Lokshakti Abhiyan in Odisha. The committee members will chalk out an action plan which includes addressing meetings to educate farmers and to resist the Centre’s move by resorting to programmes like ‘jail bharo’.
