Anganwadi workers have threatened to lock the ICDS offices also if the government failed to respond to their demands.

They staged a dharna in front of ICDS Project Director’s office near Benz Circle here on Tuesday.

The Anganwadi workers gathered in huge numbers and laid a siege to the office. They squatted in front of the office and obstructed the activities. Obstructing the movement of PD vehicle, they demanded an assurance from the PD.

They said that the government should recognise the anganwadi workers as government employees.

The government should also extend social security to them. The government should desist form the ideas such as handing over of ICDS to private or voluntary organisations. Instead, the ICDS should be strengthened, they said.

Retirement benefits, roll back of hike in LPG prices, recruitment of vacancies, anganwadi workers and helpers, were some of other demands.

CPI (M) city secretary Ch. Babu Rao, CITU city secretary M. V. Sudhakar, union president Rajeena, secretary NCH Supraja, Sramika Mahila Samanvya Committee convenor Ch. Kusuma and others were present.
