Here is an opportunity for academicians and others who have the skills to translate academic books from English to Telugu.
The National Translation Mission (NTM) of the Mysore-based Central Institute of Indian Languages has come out with a plan to recruit translators and subject experts on contract basis, with the intention of translating and publishing at least 20 textbooks of undergraduate and postgraduate courses from English to Telugu in the current academic year.
To select subject experts and translators, the NTM is conducting a workshop at the Vijayawada Book Festival Society’s office opposite Civil Courts from 10.30 a.m. on Saturday. The NTM, which has already set up a stall (No. 198) at the ongoing 21st Vijayawada Book Festival, is creating awareness among the public about its activities.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, NTM coordinator K. Srinivasacharya, senior academic consultants P. Mathew and Winston Cruz said that the organisation was using the ongoing book festival as an occasion to establish contact with the local people who would be able to select textbooks and translate them from English to Telugu.
At the end of the workshop, a written test would be conducted. This would be followed by an interview for those who succeed in the written test, in a couple of weeks. During the interview, selected texts would be handed over to the translators and a deadline for completion of the work would be stipulated.
Remuneration
“The remuneration we pay is certainly the best in the industry. Those interested can take up translation even as a part time job,” they said.
The NTM representatives said that the organisation was launched in July 2008 to promote education in mother tongue, as it would help even the students studying in English medium to understand the subject well. The NTM had so far recruited 2,500 translators from different States and the translation of over 50,000 titles was in progress. The interested ones could visit the NTM website www.ntm.org.in.
