All-party leaders urge government to save farmers

It is estimated that about 10,000 tonnes of paddy stocks were damaged by rain

Leaders of All Party delegation appealed to the Government to procure the discoloured paddy and save the farmers in Krishna district.

In a representation submitted to Agriculture Minister Kanna Lakshminarayana, the CPI(M), CPI, TDP, CPI(ML), YSR Congress and other party leaders said that due to heavy rains that occurred in Diviseema area in the district on January 1, paddy in about seven mandals was damaged.

It was estimated that, about 10,000 tonnes of paddy stocks were damaged by rain and even the commercial crops raised in the second crop were also spoiled due to the rains, they said.

Unable to bear the losses, two farmers -- D. Sivaramakrishnaiah of Ghantasala mandal committed suicide while A. Rambabu of Koduru mandal – died due to heart attack, said the leaders.

Ex gratia

They demanded the government to produce the damaged paddy, provide Rs.5 lakh ex gratia to the kin of the deceased farmers, pay Rs.10,000 per acre to the farmers who suffered losses and take up rehabilitation works in drought hit mandals.
