All economic policies that are initiated by a nation are based on statistical data.
The subject of statistics plays an important role, be it running a country or a firm, said Vijayawada Sub-Collector Dasari Harichandana.
She inaugurated the 7th Statistics Day celebrations organised by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) here on Saturday.
Addressing students pursuing economics and statistics at various colleges, she said, numbers never lie and statistical data can never go wrong and that is why the government gives so much importance to statistical data.
“The government needs data and there is a huge scope for young statisticians in the government sector,” she said. Statistics Day is observed every year on July 29, on the birth anniversary of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalnobis, who was the founder of the famed Indian Statistical Institute and member of the Planning Commission during the tenure of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
The NSSO Regional Director G. Satish said Professor Mahalnobis is considered to be the father of Statistics in India and was accepted globally for his path-breaking Mahalnobis Model which was used while drafting the Second Five-year Plan.
Every year a theme is designed for the day and this year it is ‘Labour and employment’.
“The NSSO is given the task to collect data on the theme and after a year-long data collection and research, the document is submitted to the government for policy making,” said Mr. Satish.
Giving details on the functioning of NSSO, he said there were three departments: Design department - which plays the role of preparing the questionnaire, data collection department – which is actually the field survey department, data processing department and publication department - that complies and produces the report.
The day-long event comprised of paper presentations and lectures, quiz, elocution and essay writing.
Guest lectures were delivered by Andhra Loyola College Head of the Department, Economics, S. Yosebu, Eluru-based St. Theresa Degree College for Women Economics Head D. Madhu Malathi and Institute of Labour and Employment –Vijayawada Senior Education Officer Syed Bashir Ahmed.
