The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) celebrated its 92nd foundation day in a grand manner here. On the occasion, the AITUC members vowed to fight in letter and spirit against the anti-worker policies being pursued, what they called, by the State and Central governments here on Wednesday.

Addressing a gathering, Communist Party of India (CPI) city secretary Donepudi Sankar recalled that the economic reforms initiated during the P.V. Narasimha Rao government had impacted all sectors. The reforms continue to affect the commoner. The government was shedding its responsibilities in providing basic facilities, infrastructure and monetary benefits to the workers.

The contract system ruined the employment system. The job security was a distant dream, and the workers were leading a miserable life. The trade unions were coming onto one platform to wage a united struggle against the lopsided policies of the government.

Still, there was a need to intensify the agitations and mount pressure on the governments to do away with the contract system, and implement the labour laws effectively, he said.

AITUC city general secretary T.V. Ramana Murthy, who presided over the meeting, explained the achievements of the AITUC over last 92 years. The AITUC played a significant role in fixing the working hours, extending medical, education and accidental insurance benefits to the workers.

Earlier, AITUC senior leader Orsu Ramulu hoisted the ‘worker flag’ to mark the celebrations. AITUC State leaders Palla Surya Rao, city vice-president Viyyapu Nageswara Rao, Seram Durga Rao, Asula Ranganayakulu, AIYF State president Navaneetham Sambasiva Rao and others were present.
