Airport expansion: plot owners say ‘no’ to deal

May 15, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:00 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Hundreds of plot owners of Vijay Sai Housing Estates are a peeved lot for they would be losing their precious property to the State Government’s acquisition exercise towards expansion of the Gannavaram airport.

The housing plots situated at Allapuram, close to the airport, have come under acquisition and the package announcement by the State Government at Amaravati is not acceptable to them.

More than hundred plot owners met at the Hanumantharaya Grandhalayam on Saturday and took decision to say no to the Government’s proposal.

Says Ms. Vedavati, a plot owner: “When we bought the plot in 2012, the State was united and there was neither land acquisition nor plans for Gannavaram airport expansion. In fact, air port authorities have issued the residents no objection certificate (NOC) and encouraged them to buy and build houses. The subsequent developments came as a shocker to us.”

She said the Government was offering a meagre 1,000 square yards per acre in the residential segment and 400 square yards per acre in the commercial segment at Amaravati.

“If someone who is having 160 square yards of plot he or she will be getting 30 square yards which will be of no use as the minimum land for registration at the new capital city is 60 square yards,” Ms. Vedavati said.

The majority of the plot owners were middle class retired employees from banks and Central and State government departments.

“Plot-for-plot is our demand. Otherwise we will be put to a lot of difficulty,” they said in unison.
