Agri. students step up protest against distance education

April 01, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:58 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Demonstration by agricultural college students, as a part of their state-wide stir demanding revocation of the proposal to begin graduate courses through distance mode and several other issues, turned ugly as the protestors had a minor tiff with police officials near Tummalagunta circle, in Tirupati on Thursday.

The students, equipped with banners and placards, took out a rally from S.V. Agricultural College to the centre, voicing their demands through slogans. When the students were about to organise a ‘raasta roko’, police officials intervened as the students did not have permission for their demonstration and it was causing severe inconvenience to the traffic.

Later, agricultural college officials interacted with students and assured them of addressing their demands. They maintained that the proposal for introducing distance mode education would be revoked and with regard to allowing private colleges to introduce agriculture graduate courses, the State Government was yet to take a decision on that issue.

Agricultural college students, for the past few days, have been protesting against the move as they opined that the distance mode of education would dilute the standard of professional courses in agriculture and strengthen the monopoly of private institutions.

In Rajamahendravaram, students of the agriculture university intensified their agitation.

The students, supported by unions such as the SFI and ABVP raised slogans against the government for “trying to destroy the education system.”
