Location of the High Court for residual Andhra Pradesh State is one of the several questions the bifurcation has thrown up.
The legal fraternity in this part of the State is keeping its fingers crossed hoping that Vijayawada emerges as a hot favourite.
The Guntur Bar Association (GBA) long ago staked its claim on the ground that the HC originally existed in Guntur from July 1954 till the end of 1956.
Soon after the certainty of bifurcation became clear, the GBA put forth its demand before the Chief Justice of A.P High Court calling it a ‘historic necessity’.
But the GBA move has not gone down too well with the advocates of Vijayawada.
The reason for it, according to Bezawada Bar Association president M. Jayakar, is space constraint in Guntur and greater activity in Vijayawada city.
Pointing to the fact that the premises of Guntur District and Session Courts is not spacious enough to accommodate the High Court and a host of institutions attached to it, Mr. Jayakar suggests that the principal seat of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh be set up between Vijayawada and Guntur along with two benches, one at Visakhapatnam and Anantapur or Chittoor.
Advocates of Vijayawada and Guntur who fought collectively for over 100 days at a stretch in 2010 demanding an HC Bench between the two cities, have changed their tunes post-bifurcation.
‘Locate HC in Guntur’GUNTUR: State Bar Council member V. Brahma Reddy demanded that the government set up High Court in Guntur district and two benches in Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions.
Speaking to the newsmen here on Monday, Mr. Reddy said if the government sanctions High Court in one region, advocates in other districts would oppose the move.
As Guntur court can accommodate 22 judges with a good library and parking facility, High Court should be allocated for Guntur district, he said.
