Students of the first batch of the AIIMS, Mangalagiri, would use the laboratory facilities at the SMC and would get trained at the Government General Hospital, Vijayawada, till the construction of the residential complex and the Out Patient Department Block which is scheduled to be completed by March, 2019.

The construction of the Phase 1 of the AIIMS is progressing at a satisfactory pace with 25% of work of the targeted 32% completed. During the Phase-1, the contracting agency is aiming to complete the OPD block and the residential complex at a cost of ₹272.54 crore.

During the second phase, construction of hospital and academic campus are set to be completed before February 20. The foundation stone was laid in December 2015 and the work began in September 2017 by the Central government. The State government allotted 196 acres belonging to the Medical and Health Department, where a TB sanatorium had existed.

During a crucial meeting held on May 10, district Collector Kona Sasidhar and Secretary of Health, Government of India along with Principal Secretary, Health, AP, Poonam Malakondaiah thrashed out several issues relating to the demolition of the old buildings of the sanatorium, water supply of 4 MLD, a 133/33 KV sub station, shifting of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and laying of an approach road from the National Highway.

“The construction of the AIIMS is progressing satisfactorily. The AP government had extended its whole-hearted support for the project and we hope to see students as early as May next year,” said the manager of the contracting agency.
