Address real problems of people at Prajapatham, says Raghavulu

The real problems that the people are facing, like the ever-increasing prices, cancellation of genuine ration cards, proposed hike in power tariff, non-payment of arrears for housing and non-payment of wages to beneficiaries of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act should be addressed in Prajapatham programme, said Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu, here on Friday.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Raghavulu said officials and elected representatives should address the real problems of the people and not try to use the programme beginning on Monday as a campaign to promote the government.

The CPI (M) leader said the beneficiaries of Indiramma housing were finding it very difficult to complete the houses with the funds provided to them. Several of them were suffering because bills were pending and they were being forced to borrow from unscrupulous money leaders to tide over the difficulty.

He said the public distribution system had been rendered most ineffective. The Congress government distributed 40 lakh ration cards before the elections, but many beneficiaries, who received the cards have not been receiving ration.

The pre-election promise to give 30 kg of rice to each family still remained unfulfilled. The cancelling of ration cards of genuine beneficiaries under the guise of weeding out bogus cards was also causing hardship to the poor, he said.

Asked about the arguments being put forward by the State government in front of the Krishna River Water tribunal, Mr. Raghavulu said the CPI (M) was of the opinion that arguments being put forward by the State government were not suitable.
