Charging the police with hatching a conspiracy to kill Pidatala Satyam Babu, accused in Pharmacy student Ayesha Meera's murder case, civil rights organisations on Saturday demanded that action be initiated against the police officials responsible for the reported missing of Satyam Babu.
Krishna district secretary of the Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee (APCLC) M. Venkateswarlu, in a statement here, accused the police of cooking up the story of ‘Satyam Babu escaping' and again coming out with another story of arresting him. “The arrest story is nothing but a damage control exercise done by the police. Bowing to pressure from the media and various civil rights organisations, the police revised the story created by them and arrested Satyam Babu in a fresh case,” he said.
Lathicharge condemned
The APCLC demanded that the government order CBI enquiry into the incident and take steps not to repeat such stories. Echoing similar opinion, Krishna district secretary of the Communist Party of India (M-L) Muppalla Bhargava Sri, in another statement, condemned police lathicharge on villagers of Annasagaram while they were staging a dharna in front of Nandigama police station demanding that Satyam Babu be presented before them.
“The police originally planned to kill Satyam Babu in an encounter. Since human rights and dalit rights organisations took the issue seriously and launched agitation across the State, the police were left with no option but to cook up another story stating that they caught him at Jaggayyapet,” Mr. Bhargava Sri said.
He said that it was unfair on the part of the police officials to place the escort police under suspension and demanded that action be initiated against the police officials who were responsible for the incident. He also demanded that protection be arranged to Satyam Babu.
He recalled how the police first arrested Gurvindar Singh alias Laddu in the murder case of Ayesha Meera and then framed charges against Satyam Babu. “With regard to this case, the police are misleading every organisation right from the beginning. The ‘missing' episode is just another trick played by the police,” he said.
