The Krishna Delta System Chief Engineer D. Sambaiah has recommended action against the contractor, who executed the dredging of Pedalanka major drain in the district.

In a letter addressed to Engineer in Chief (Irrigation), Mr. Sambaiah said the contractor, Hyderabad-based M/s. B.V.S.R. Constructions, had violated the agreement. The contractor has allegedly not carried out the works properly as per the agreement conditions, and preferred the bill to an excess amount of Rs.6.45 crore.

Responding to reports published in the media the State government directed the Engineering-in-Chief (irrigation) to constitute a technical team to submit a report to it. Based on the report action was initiated against the field staff. The Engineering-in-Chief also ordered that action be initiated against the contractor. Orders were given to Vijayawada Irrigation Circle SE to submit a report on the work of the contractor.

The Superintending Engineer in his report said that the contractor had executed the works unsatisfactorily. As per AP PWD code part B Clause 3(1)(i), the contractor could be demoted to lower class if he fails to execute the work satisfactorily and proved to be responsible for constructional defects, he said, adding, “hence action may be initiated against the agency.”
