A month after the heinous acid attack on a girl and her mother, police on Sunday arrested the prime accused, Subhani (35), soon after he was discharged from the government hospital in Vijayawada.

According to office of the Machilipatnam SP, the police had to wait for three weeks to arrest him citing his health. A team of police led by Machilipatnam DSP K.V. Srinivasa Rao on Sunday took Mr. Subhani into custody and would produce him before a local court in Machilipatnam on Monday.

A case under the Nirbhaya Act was registered against Mr. Subhani, police say. On March 29, the accused had surrendered before the police and was referred to the government hospital, Vijayawada for better medical treatment to the trio including the victims-the girl and her mother.

Mr. Subhani has been completely recovered from the burnt injuries he received during the incident as he poured the acid on him on that night. The accused had resorted to the extreme step after the victim's family had rejected his proposal to marry her daughter.
