The prime accused in the murder of 19-year-old pharmacy student Ayesha Meera here escaped from police custody while he was being brought back to jail from Hyderabad following a health check-up.
Satyam Babu gave police the slip near Suryapeta town in Andha Pradesh’s Nalgonda district late last night when the vehicle ferrying him stopped at a roadside hotel, police said.
The 23-year-old had been taken to Hyderabad for a medical check up three days ago. He was being brought to the district jail here when he escaped, they said.
All the members of the escort team- a Sub-Inspector and 10 Constables - have been suspended by Police Commissioner P. S. R. Anjaneyulu for dereliction of duty, they said.
Meera was found murdered in December 2007 in her room at a private hostel in the city.
