V. Hanumantha Rao, prime accused in YSR Congress leader and businessman B. Srisaila Vasu’s murder, surrendered before the police here on Wednesday. He had fled to Hyderabad after committing the offence on October 28 and from there went to Mumbai and Nagpur to avoid the police dragnet. He returned on Tuesday.

According to DSP Rajesh Murali, Rao had invested about Rs. 1 crore in different businesses carried out by Vasu and wanted the sum to be returned after differences cropped up between them. Vasu had returned Rs. 67 lakh. However, a dispute arose between the two over payment of the remaining sum, which eventually led to Vasu’s murder.

Rao had returned from the US where he was looking for a software job to sort out the issue. But, things took a gory turn as he eliminated Vasu in connivance with hired killers.

Vasu was involved in sand, chilli and liquor businesses besides being a former sarpanch of his native village Chandapuram. Rao is likely to be produced in court on November 27.
