Drastic decline in the turnout of persons to Aadhaar enrolment centres is pushing the authorities to shift the centres out of the city to interior places where they are needed more in numbers.
Enrolment of families living below the poverty line was taken up as a drive with considerable success in the rural areas of Krishna district. The same, however, could not be done for the urban areas and families living above the poverty line.
While 92 per cent of the estimated population in the rural areas have already enrolled for Aadhaar, only 81 per cent have enrolled in the urban areas.
The authorities have set May 15 as the date for completion of enrolment for the general public. Special exemption will be given to those who could not get enrolled for genuine reasons till the end of the month.
“There are about 30 kits (enrolment centres) for enrolling people for Aadhaar card in the Vijayawada revenue division. While between 50 and 60 enrolments were planned in a kit per day, the current of enrolment was between 20 and 30 a day,” said P. Komali Padma, Assistant Supplies Officer (ASO).
There was a marked difference in the scenario at the enrolment centres compared to the past. There was no need for people to wait for long durations now. The application forms were also available at the same spot. “People can walk in, get enrolled, and walk out without having to wait,” Ms. Padma said.
The district administration is racing against time to get people in the district enrolled for Aadhaar because the district is one among the several districts that have been selected for implementation of cooking gas subsidy scheme.
From July 1, all would need Aadhaar cards for booking of cooking gas. They should also link their Aadhaar cards to their bank accounts so that the subsidy on gas could be deposited in the accounts of the cooking gas buyers.
