District Collector S. Suresh Kumar suggested to the people to obtain Aadhaar cards before July 1 in order to avail the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme which will be implemented from that date.
He allayed apprehensions that the Unique Identification (Aadhaar) project will curtail benefits being currently enjoyed under various schemes.
However, those who fail to furnish their UID numbers before the given date will have to forego the subsidy on LPG refills.
Disbursement of the other two benefits linked to Aadhaar (scholarships and pensions) will by and large remain the same except that the transfer (of benefits) might be delayed in the event of non-compliance.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Mr. Suresh Kumar stated that only LPG refills, pensions and scholarships are being covered under the DBT coming into effect on July 1.
DBT will not affect any other scheme. A total of 35 schemes are planned to be linked to Aadhaar at the national level in a phased manner after due consultations with the States.
Registering of Aadhaar numbers with the LPG dealers has been tardy with only 3.17 lakh out of total 12.80 lakh LPG consumers furnishing the requisite information.
Those not complying with the rule before the end of June will have to buy LPG refills at non-subsidised price of nearly Rs. 970.
For the purpose of securing subsidies on LPG refills, consumers can directly give their Aadhaar numbers to the respective banks where they have accounts and also to the dealers.
Of the 3.10 lakh Aadhar numbers allotted to pensioners, 2.54 lakh were collected by the departments concerned for making disbursements through Post Offices in rural areas and Axis Bank in the urban centres.
Those who did not furnish Aadhar numbers will continue to receive pension manually.
Out of 1.50 lakh Aadhar numbers allotted to students drawing various scholarships, 89,000 have been seeded with the bank accounts concerned.
Mr. Suresh Kumar said steps were being taken for setting up permanent Aadhar enrolment centres at important places.
Children aged below 5 and 15 who have got Aadhar numbers have to get the same renewed after crossing those ages.
