For a change, women on Monday displayed their culinary skills, not to please their family members, but to impress upon devotees by making Ganesh idols of various hues.
In connection with the ongoing Ganesh festival, Sri Bala Ganapati Swamy Temple Utsav committee came up with a unique competition for women. The task is to make idols of various sizes and shapes with a variety of sweets. More than 35 women from different localities in One Town took part in the contest and came up with impressive idols that drew the attention of devotees.
The contestants made idols of yummy ‘gulab jamun’, sweet ‘boondi’ ‘gavvalu’, ‘halwa’ and ‘rava kesari’. Three women - M. Padamavathi, Ch. Latha and U. Uma Devi - won the first, second and third prizes respectively. While Ms. Padamavathi made a Ganesh model using ‘rava kesari’, Ms. Latha prepared an idol with ‘halwa’ and Ms. Umadevi with sweet ‘boondi’.
While the first prize winner got Rs. 3,000, the second and third prize winner received Rs. 2,000 and Rs.1,000 respectively. Consolation prizes were also given to the participants. The response to the event was overwhelming.
“The way idols were decorated won appreciation from devotees,” Utsav committee president G. Srinivasa Rao said, adding that the committee was organising a series of programmes.
