It turned out to be a day of protest on Wednesday in the city with students and other sections of people resorting to demonstrations in different forms highlighting issues confronting them.
The police arrested four persons, including an activist of the Student Federation of India (SFI), in a bid to foil the alleged attempts by students from professional colleges across the district to storm the Collectorate on the demand of fee reimbursement.
The demonstration staged by the supporters of the Kadapa former MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy on the same issue at Sir.C.R. Reddy College marred the practical exams in progress for the senior Intermediate students for some time. The protesters blocked the main gates of the college in a bid to prevent the students from taking the exam. However such attempts did not succeed, thanks to the multiple entries that college has through which the students managed to creep in and took the exams.
A group of Mr. Jagan's supporters launched a relay fast at the fire station centre, expressing solidarity with their fasting leader in Hyderabad in defence of the cause of the students.
Some students held up traffic at the fire station centre highlighting their demand. The members of the Pattana Pedala Sangham, an outfit owing allegiance to the CPI (M), staged a dharna at Pattebada centre, drawing the attention of the Municipal Corporation of Eluru (MCE) to the civic problems in the city.
Citing the poor sanitary conditions in the 31st division, they said the open drainage system resulted in mosquitoes posing a serious threat to public health all over the city, they said.
