Going down the memory lane of an inspiring journey into world of painting, 83-year-old artist Dronadula Govinda Rajulu demonstrated techniques in painting and shared his experiences with a group of budding artists in Vijayawada on Sunday.
Students, women, professional painters and sculptors carrying painting boards turned up to the session, in which budding artists were taught about the techniques in sketching and painting to attain perfection. The Andhra Academy of Arts conducted the demonstration session on painting and interaction with Mr. Govinda Rajulu at the M.S. Murthi Lalit Kala Art Gallery in Mutyalampadu. The GRIG Memorial Gold Medal recipient (1948 and 1949) Govinda Rajulu, who recently recovered from a paralytic stroke, demonstrated how to prepare a sketch on the canvas or paper. “Perfection of an artist lies in how best the sketch is planned and selection of the medium,” he said.
He explained to children on the basics of sketching for a drawing and mixing of water and acrylic colours on canvas. He completed sketching of a dozen portraits of woman’s life in myriad hues and her emotions on the white board. He completed two acrylic colour portraits on the cloth, dreamy woman and rural woman, in half-an-hour.
“Unique style of my work is speed. My quest is to share my professional knowledge and experience with the younger generation till the last breath,” said the self-taught artist Govinda Rajulu. An untitled album of the artist’s work since late 1940s was made available to the audience during the demonstration. Getting to watch canvas works, black and white sketches on the woman’s life and feelings, nature and live sketching of the people in the album is an incredible experience, opined Prithvi, a budding artist. The Andhra Academy of Arts president M. Anand Swaroop said that a special wing of sculptures will come up on the gallery premises soon.
“A website of the gallery will be designed after the digitalisation of the works in the gallery was over,” he said.
