70 crest gates of barrage lifted

The Irrigation authorities have raised all the 70 crest gates of Prakasam Barrage to release 97,000 cusecs of surplus water on Sunday evening.

The level of water at the barrage has been decreased to 10.2 feet in anticipation of the huge volume of water expected from Nagarjuna Sagar in the next couple of days.

The authorities said that along with the 1.4 lakh cusecs being discharged from Nagarjuna Sagar an additional 30,000 cusecs from the tributaries and streams is being discharged into the river below the dam would increase the inflow of the head pond of the barrage to between 1.5 and 2 lakh cusecs in the next 24 hours.
