6.95 lakh voters register for VMC polls

Of the 580 polling stations in 59 divisions, authorities identify 288 as highly sensitive

Arrangements have been completed for holding elections to the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) on March 30. A total of 6,94,739 people have registered as voters comprising 3,49,005 men, 345,662 women and 72 ‘others’. A total of 580 polling stations have been set up in 59 divisions.

The VMC authorities and the Police Department have identified 288 highly sensitive and 147 sensitive polling stations in the city where 425,872 people will be casting their votes.

Krishnalanka and Kothapet have been identified as vulnerable areas. Accordingly, tight security arrangements have been put in place for preventing any untoward incident in the run-up to elections and during polling.

District Collector M. Raghunandana Rao, Municipal Commissioner C. Hari Kiran and Police Commissioner B. Sreenivasulu reviewed the arrangements and instructed officials not to leave anything to chance in view of the volatile situation. Polling station number 10 in the seventh division (Moghalrajpuram) has the least number of voters at 791.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hari Kiran in a press release clarified that people who were not given voter slips could cast their votes without any problem provided they have their names in the electoral rolls. ID proofs

People possessing any one of the following proofs containing photographs in addition to electors’ photo ID cards can exercise their right to vote: passport, driving licence, PAN card, identity card given by Central or State government to an employee, bank/pattadar/Kisan passbook, property tax document, ration card, caste certificate, pension passbook, freedom fighter card, Army licence, certificate of physical handicap, ATM card, Bar Council of AP identity card, Secretariat card, NREGA job card and LIC document.
