The Irrigation authorities had to raise 63 crest gates of the Prakasam Barrage to release the surplus water being received from the upper reaches here on Wednesday. The tail pond of Prakasam Barrage received over 50,000 cusecs from Nagarjuna Sagar and rivulets that empty into the river between the reservoir and the barrage.

While the irrigation authorities diverted about 10,000 cusecs into the canals irrigating the delta the surplus water had to be released by raising the crest gates.

The inflow at the barrage dropped towards the evening with the authorities lowering 20 gates reducing the discharge from the barrage to 33,000 cusecs.
