: With Director-General of Police (DGP) J.V. Ramudu going to retire from service on July 23, the race for the prestigious post has started. A 1981 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Mr. Ramudu assumed charge in July 2014. However, the State government is reportedly planning to extend his service by a couple of months in view of the ensuing Krishna Pushkaram.

Senior IPS officers S.A. Huda (1979 batch), Commissioner of Enquiries, S.V. Ramana Murthy (1982 batch) currently serving as the AP State Road Safety Authority Chairman, and N. Sambasiva Rao (1984 batch IPS officer), now Managing Director of AP State Road Transport Corporation, are competing for the DGP post.

Mr. Huda is having one year service (up to July 2017), Mr. Ramana Murthy (up to September 2018) and Mr. Sambasiva Rao will retire in December 2017.

The State government will send a list of IPS officers to the Centre, and chances are bright for Mr. Sambasiva Rao, who is likely to be appointed as in-charge DGP once Mr. Ramudu completes his term, sources said.

Meanwhile, four Additional Director Generals (Addl. DGs) – M. Malakondaiah of 1985, R.P. Thakur, D. Gautam Sawang and Vinay Ranjan Ray of the 1986 batch —are likely to be elevated to DG rank .
