Following considerable inflows, irrigation authorities lifted 10 gates at Prakasam Barrage to release nearly 12,000 cusecs into the sea on Saturday evening. Authorities are expecting more inflows into the barrage on Sunday too.

Superintending Engineer K. Srinivasa Rao said nearly 30,000 cusecs of water was released from Nagarjunasagar Project late in the evening. Of these, 18,500 cusecs would be utilised for releasing water into canals and the rest would be discharged downstream, said Mr. Rao.

“We have received a flood warning from the Central Water Commissioner, Vijayawada, and had to discharge water downstream,” said Mr. Rao. The increasing inflow and the discharge of excess water is also helping in maintaining the ecological balance of the delta system, added Mr. Rao.
