Personnel working at the camp office of Collector Kantilal Dande had a providential escape on Thursday afternoon when a 100-year-old birch tree got uprooted and fell on the office.

The tree fell with a thud at around 3 p.m., smashing the windscreen of a car parked behind the clerk office room and a generator was also damaged. With heavy rain since Wednesday night, the aged tree got uprooted as its roots had grown weaker.

“I noticed sparks emanating from the electric pole and had rushed out in the nick of time before the tree came crashing down on the office,’’ said Bhavani, CC to the Collector.

Collector Kantilal Dande had just gone to his residence after returning from a tour of rain-affected areas in Guntur. The power supply was restored by 6 p.m. A Tamarind tree was also uprooted and fell on the office.
