Burglars targeted a locked house at Srirangam and decamped with gold jewellery weighing 41 sovereigns.

The burglary at the densely populated Mela Chithirai Veethi came to light after the house owner S. Venkatasubramanian returned home on Thursday.

The offence took place when Venkatasubramanian, a lecturer in a private engineering college here, had gone to Chennai a couple of days ago to his relative’s house to attend a wedding. Sources said the culprits gained entry into the house through the upstairs making use of the scaffolding erected close by.

Upon reaching the upstairs, the burglars broke open the door to enter the house and made away with the valuables kept inside the steel cupboard. The burglars left the place the same way by which they gained entry without disturbing front or rear doors.

Venkatasubramanian, who noticed the burglary by opening the front door, informed the police.

Senior police officers inspected the house and conducted inquiries. Fingerprint experts visited the house looking out for any foreign prints inside.

A tracker dog utilised for crime detection was brought to the spot to track the route taken by the accused. The burglary comes days after a similar type of offence was committed in the house of a senior manager of a private medical college at Bikshandarkoil on the city’s outskirts when he was away.

The burglars decamped with 45 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs. 20,000 cash from the manager’s house.

Although the two happen to be separate incidents, the modus operandi of the burglars seems to be similar in targeting locked houses at the opportune time to make a killing at a time when summer vacation has just begun.
