A writing room for children with special needs was inaugurated at the Pravaag Transitional Centre and School for Children With Autism in the city on Friday.
Named Strokes and Curves, the writing room was meant to help children with autism develop writing skills.
V. Sharadha of Chennai Medical College Research Centre, Tiruchi, inaugurated the room in the presence of M. Valli, president, Rotary Club of Tiruchi Shakthi, and K. Jayabalan, former Additional Director of Rural Development, Tiruchi, according to a release from the centre.
Dr. Sharadha said that handwriting was complex perceptual-motor skill dependent on integration of a number of cognitive, perceptual, and motor skills, which could be developed through instruction.
K. Geetha, director of Pravaag, said the difficulties faced by many autistic children in developing gross motor abilities which manifest through poor handwriting and problems with coordination. Children with such problems were recommended hand therapy. She elaborated on the purpose of hand therapy to build muscle tone and explained to the parents that the practices be given daily at home, the release added.
