Work on the second phase of the ring road around Thanjavur would begin in the first week of December, said N. Subbaiyan, Collector, in Thanjavur on Saturday. He inspected the stretch from the new collectorate on Thanjavur-Tiruchi national highway, from where the second phase of the ring road would begin, to Manakarambai on Thanjavur-Ariyalur road.
The road is to a distance of 14 kilometres. Initially, work will be taken up on nine kilometres at a cost of Rs. 52 crore.
Three bridges will be constructed across Grand Anicut canal at Neelagiri panchayat, Vennar at Palliagraharam, and at Vannarapettai. Nine roundabouts will also be constructed.
Starting near the new collectorate building on Tamil University campus, the road will be laid up to Manakarambai via Pillaiyarpatti, Vannarapettai-Manojipatti road, Thanjavur-Budalur road, and Kalimedu village.
First half
The first half of the ring road was completed during the eighth World Tamil Conference in Thanjavur in 1995 for a distance of 17 kilometres.
This had connected Thanjavur-Tiruchi road, Thajnjavur-Pattukottai road, Thanjavur-Nagapattinam road, Thanjavur-Kumbakonam road, and Thanjavur-Thiruvaiyaru road.
“The second phase of the ring road will be completed in 18 months from the date of commencement of work,” the Collector said.
