Vathalai will have a new police station by the end of this year. The British-built station at this village on the banks of the Cauvery, with its rural ambience, looks more like a residence than a police station.
Further, it also lacks adequate space, necessitating the construction of the new station in the nearby area.
The work is being executed by the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation at an estimate of Rs. 63.25 lakh, is being constructed on a plinth area of about 2,300 square feet — approximately 1,190 square feet on the first floor and second floor each. It will have a separate chamber for the police personnel, record room and other basic infrastructure.
The old police station, built by the British in 1938, has been in tact but it will be demolished for the construction of additional buildings including quarters.
The station has a sprawling area which will be best utilised for expansion in future, sources told The Hindu on Monday.
