Work on the construction of an anicut across the Mudiyanar in Aranthangi taluk in Pudukottai district would begin this year.
The anicut has been sanctioned by the State Government at an estimated cost of Rs.1 crore, according to M.Paneerselvam, Public Works Department, Plan Formulation Division, Tiruchi.
The anicut would run for a length of about 47 metres and stand four feet in height. It would harness flood discharges of about 120.93 cubic metres.
The Athani tank water flows into Mudiyanar. About 600 metres of new supply channels would be built as part of the project, Mr.Paneerselvam told The Hindu. Once completed, the anicut would provide a supply of 64 cusecs of water for irrigation.
About 638 acres of ayacut area would stand to benefit by the construction of the anicut.
By stabilising irrigation for this area, the project would contribute to an additional food grain production of about 2,231 tonnes per annum.
The Plan Formulation Division has drawn up the estimates and the project works are expected to commence within the next couple of months.
