A 50-year-old woman was killed in her apartment on North Andar Street here on Monday.
A. Mahalakshmi was staying alone on the second-floor flat. Police sources said gold jewellery weighing over 11 sovereigns worn by the victim was reportedly taken away by the accused.
Husband in Chennai
The victim's husband, Amirthalingam, was said to be staying in Chennai.
The crime came to light after the woman's daughter who had gone out in the morning returned in the afternoon. She found Mahalakshmi lying dead in a pool of blood.
The victim bore cut injuries in the neck and on a finger.
An alert was sounded to the police control room following which Commissioner of Police K. Vanniaperumal rushed to the spot accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Rupesh Kumar Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) R. Tamilchandran and senior city police officials.
City police officials conducted enquiries and requisitioned the services of fingerprint experts.
A tracker dog specialised in crime detection was pressed into service. The Fort Police are investigating.
Special teams have been formed.
