The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation on Saturday joined a select list of corporations in the State to have air-conditioned bus shelters.

The City Union Bank (CUB), which has fully sponsored the project in Tiruchi, is operating A/C bus shelter in Kumbakonam, its headquarters.

Out of four committed bus shelters, three have become functional. They have been set up at Amma Mandapam, Gandhi Market and Joseph Eye Hospital at a cost of Rs.36 lakh. The Minister for Khadi and Village Industries T.P. Poonatchi inaugurated them on Saturday in the presence of A.Jaya, Mayor, K.S.Palanisamy, Collector, V.P.Thandapani, Commissioner, and R.Chandran, City Engineer.

The shelters have been provided with convenient modern chairs, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), and coffee-vending machines. Closed Circuit Cameras have also been installed.

A senior official of the Corporation said that work on setting up of one more AC shelter at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital was under way. It would be thrown open to public soon. There are 209 bus shelters in Tiruchi city. Depending upon the success, the pilot project would be expanded to other places with the support of private donors.
